20 Years of Photoshop

Photoshop turned 20 this year. I first started using version 1 in college, back when it was Mac only, offered only greyscale, and had no layers. It was really meant to act as a digital darkroom for post processing scanned photos. You could sort of draw stuff with it, but that’s what Illustrator was for. Suggesting that one might one day use Photoshop to design web sites or illustrate comics would have been like suggesting that one day Notepad would be used to help land airplanes.

I use Photoshop practically every day. My work depends on it.

Here’s to you, Photoshop. Who knows where I would be without you.

Printing Woes

Once I had put together The Stork, I needed a place to get it printed. For the trial run, I used Kinko’s/FedEx Office. Fantastic results in less than a day, but very expensive. I wanted to be able to print it cheaply enough to sell for $1-$2 or just give away.

I had seen some of the work Guild of Blades had done for card games and they recently started doing Print on Demand books. Their prices were insanely low. So I called them up, discussed the job, and sent them the PDFs. I didn’t hear anything back. I called about a week later to follow up. They were really busy and hadn’t had a chance to review the files. This went on for two months. Finally, in January, they had time to look at my files. Continue reading →

Achievement Unlocked

Sometimes I fall into that slough of self-examination where I feel as though I have accomplished nothing with my life. Or, when compared to Person X, I am found wanting. This often happens when I’m not currently working on a creative project, as they tend to define me and give me purpose.

So I think it might be helpful to recollect the things I have achieved. Not in a boastful, resting on my laurels sort of way. But to remind myself that I am the same person who did all of those things. Try it yourself when you are feeling somewhat less than. Continue reading →

Don’t Press the Button

Something I like to do: Make random widgets in Photoshop.

The House always wins

Tonight I brought House of Whack to Boards ‘n Brews. It was good to see it on the table again. I hadn’t taught the game to new players in ages, but this was the smoothest explanation so far. There were four players, a really good size group for newcomers. We played the straight up “Inside the Box” version with nothing fancy. The Throne of Swift and Whimsical Judgment came into play and there was a pretty amusing trial as a result. Dan had a legitimate beef with Jeff, namely being forced to stand while playing and walk around in a circle. The jury was split and it came down to a roll off, which Jeff won. That’s how it goes down sometimes.

Jeff pulled ahead of everyone on the score track and took home a copy of the game. Good times!

The Neverending Story

I’m re-reading the Neverending Story, which is a bit of a misnomer because I apparently came to its end at some point in the past. I don’t know if all editions of the book are as meta as the one I own. The text alternates between maroon and green ink, just like the book in the story, indicating which parts are from the book Bastian is reading and which are Bastian’s outside world. And it also has these great full-page illustrations for the first letter of each chapter, which happen to go through the entire alphabet, A to Z, just like the “real” book. I haven’t tried yelling out “Moon Child” to see if I am swept off to a fantasy realm of luck dragons and rock biters.

I first read it some time after seeing the movie as a child. I was as engrossed in the tale as Bastian. Indeed, I even got hungry when Bastian did and felt what he felt. I was enraptured with the thought of magical books that were somehow aware of their readers and could change over time. I imagined how I could create such a book. I remember becoming interested in finding just the right sort of blank book with properly enchanted paper stock.

The movie is a fairly faithful adaptation of the first half of the book. What the movie doesn’t tell you is that after he saves Fantastica (or Fantasia, as it is called in the film) from the Nothing, Bastian becomes a mostly pompous dick. At least at the part I’m at now. He has the power to remake the world as he sees fit and he sets himself up as a total badass with ultimate authority over all he sees. I’m assuming this is all leading to a lesson in staying true to yourself.

In other news, I attended a writer’s meetup. Again, I’m getting out, meeting new people with whom I might have something in common. We met at a coffee house and read brief excerpts from three of the attendees. This was followed by a round of constructive criticism. I managed to stave off an entirely judgmental attitude and contributed suggestions that were well received. Perhaps I am growing as a person. 😉

El Camino

Obviously, Google Wave was meant to facilitate interactive fiction of the old school variety. So a while back I started an interactive story game called El Camino. Mostly as a diversion, something to put me in a narrative space. The story concerns a man racing across the Arizona highway in an El Camino. He has stolen…something…and is being pursued by persons unknown. Of course, nothing in that description is what it seems.

If you are interested in participating or just reading along, let me know and I will add you to the Wave. If you need a Google Wave invite, I got plenty of those too.

Back to Basics

I haven’t blogged much because I got into the mindset that this blog was “for” something and whatever I might be thinking about didn’t fit the profile. But then I remembered that the blog isn’t for anything at all except what I need it to be.

I’ve been consuming tons of media lately. Movies, video games, etc. Sometimes I will think “Oh no! I should be doing something else!” and start to panic. And then I remember why I am watching all the shows and playing the video games: The moment I stop being distracted, I panic or fall into despair. Unless I am creating something or enjoying something someone else has created, I get extremely unsettled and unhappy.

Despite all this dorking around, I have managed to find the energy to finish a new project. I’m not quite ready to announce anything, but some people have already had a chance to experience it. I was cheered last night when someone offered to pay for something I had made which they had received for free. So far, everyone invited to participate has done so, which gives me a wonderful feeling I rarely experience.

Turn Me Inside Out

Worlds collide.

Secret project #2 now not as secret.

And it will never be complete.

Frayed Archives

Frayed was a collaborative fiction project I did years ago. It still remains one of the most satisfying writing projects I’ve ever done. I have compiled the transcripts of the major storylines and made them available in the Library.
